Artist Statement
As a collaborative art project, the artists of TURN City Center for the Arts were invited to
place string on an overhead projector, arranging it in a design of their choosing. The
projected images were traced onto backgrounds created in a variety of media and
methods, including acrylic glaze, watercolor tissue paper, collage, and cyanotype. Each
painting is an experimentation brought to fruition by multiple artists. As the process
unfolded, tracings of tangled string evolved beyond a fun, visual experiment; it became
an element of unity. The placement of the string was spontaneous and fell into place
organically, harmonizing with the wild panoply of individual artistic styles around it.
These pieces stand as a celebration of the art of collaboration, and the synergy that
emerges from acceptance of all backgrounds and abilities.
Artist Bio
These paintings were created by the individuals of TURN City Center for the Arts
(TCCA), a creative learning space for adults with disabilities. Located in downtown Salt
Lake City, TCCA opened in 2012 as a specialized arts program within TURN
Community Services, a statewide non-profit whose vision is to be the premier provider
of quality services to people with disabilities. A variety of learning opportunities are
available to the TURN artists, including classes in painting, drawing, music, dance,
acting, and martial arts. TCCA participates in the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll, welcoming the
public to view the artists’ works on the third Friday of every month.
