This panel will explore ways to incorporate the history of all Utahns, with a focus on our Black community and the importance of providing a complete, honest, and diverse history in education. This event is held in a partnership with the Salt Lake City Mayor's Office, and YouthCity.

Diya Oommen - West High
Diya Oommen is a freshman at West High School. She works with youth in Utah to renew interest in academics, specifically mathematics. She has an interest in youth equality and is looking forward to making some changes with YouthCity Government!

Sophie Ayers-Harris - Rowland Hall
My name is Sophie Ayers-Harris, and I'm a junior at Rowland Hall in Salt Lake City. Addressing issues such as the impacts of systemic racism and teaching Black history in schools is extremely important to doing what I can to serve my community in a substantial way. I hope to be a part of confronting these difficult subjects and doing what I can to serve my community in a substantial way
Mohamed Baayd - SLCSD School Board
Mohamed Baayd is a husband, father, son to most inspiring and loving parents, oldest brother, veteran, small business owner, immigrant and represents Precinct 5 for the Salt Lake City School Board of Education. Mohamed has an associate degree in English and Arabic Literature from Morocco. Mohamed is first in his family generation and village where he was born to ever earn bachelor's and master’s degree from American Universities; Bachelor degree in anthropology socio-culture emphasis from BYU and Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from Hawaii Pacific University.
Representative Sandra Hollins (D) - House District 23
Sandra Hollins has been a resident of Salt Lake City for the past 29 years. Sandra is a member of the graduate chapter of the Greater Salt Lake Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Sandra is a licensed clinical social worker, and the primary focus of her career has been on substance abuse treatment and advocacy services for Salt Lake City’s homeless population. Sandra is the first Black American woman elected to the State Legislature and is a member Utah House of Representatives where she has proudly served District 23 since 2015. She successfully passed legislation banning knee on the neck restraint by law enforcement, requiring cultural training for school resource officers, increasing job opportunities for the formerly incarcerated and removing the provision that allow for slavery in the Utah state constitution. In the House of Representatives, she is a member of the Social Services Appropriations, Health and Human Services, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, and the Child Welfare oversight panel.
