When kids get into the habit of reading for fun, it can lead to a lifelong love of books. The City Library has three reading programs for kids and teens. Your child can track their progress, win prizes, and discover the magic that exists on every page.

You can sign up in person at any City Library. Your child will receive a reading journal they can personalize and keep as a memento of their reading journey. You can also go paperless by signing up for an online reading log at slcpl.beanstack.org.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Prepare your little one for kindergarten through the world of books. Reading is a fun and easy way for parents and caregivers to interact with their young children. This program invites you to read 1,000 books during the first five years of your child's life. For each milestone you reach in your journey (100, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 books), you will receive a prize.

Kids in grades K–3 have a fun and easy way to fall in love with books and reading. Children in this age range benefit from reading — and being read to — as they grow and develop their reading skills. All kinds of books count, including re-reading old favorites, and books that you read to your child. After every 50 books, kids can come to the Library to grab a prize.

Teens are encouraged to read for their own enjoyment throughout high school; set a goal to read 100 books before graduation! With The City Library’s customizable 100 Books journal, teens can track their reading, find inspiration, and have a keepsake to look back on after graduation. Each time teens read 10 books, they will be eligible to pick up a prize at the Library.

Reading can bring you a lifetime of adventure, knowledge, wisdom, and fun! The City Library challenges adults to read 50 books — there’s no deadline, so you can go at your own pace. Stop by any City Library location to pick up your 50 Book Challenge Tracker, where you can track your progress, win prizes, and find prompts to inspire your next read.
